Announcement: International Future Energy Challenge workshop

The Power Electronics Societies will host a workshop for the participants of the 2011 International Future Energy Challenge during the 2011 IEEE Applied Power Electronics Conference (APEC). The one-day workshop will be held on Sunday, March 6, 2011. The workshop will focus on the 2011 IFEC event, including an overview of the specifications and testing that will be performed, technical concerns of participants, and safety. There will also be guest speakers from industry to discuss the latest innovations in power electronics and motor drives. A representative from each team will give a brief overview of their team and technical progress.

The schools that have been accepted to participate in the 2011 IFEC are eligible to apply for a travel grant, which will support a stipend for only one team member (student) up to U$ 2,000.00 for teams from outside USA, and U$ 1,000.00 for teams from within USA to participate in the workshop. Only those students working toward their first degree are eligible. The travel grant will be awarded upon evaluation of a proposal addressing:

  • Team participation in the workshop (a description of those who will be attending from the team).
  • Progress that has been made on the project.
  • Support that has been raised for the project.
  • How the school is supporting the team.
  • How attendance at the workshop will be used to enhance the team.

The proposal must be no longer than three pages, single-column, double space. The proposal should clearly indicate the approximate funding that would be required for the student to attend. It is noted that funding is limited. The organizing committee will provide a review of proposals and allocate travel funding. One criterion that will be used is to encourage a diverse audience from multiple international institutions.

Please, send your proposal in PDF format to both Prof. Chunting (Chris) Mi (chrismi@umich.edu) and Prof. Maurício Beltrão de Rossiter Correa (mbrcorrea@dee.ufcg.edu.br) no later than January 15, 2011. Funding will be announced by January 18, 2011.

Proposal Evaluation Status

The IFEC committee would like to thank you for submitting your proposal for this competition edition. It is a pleasure to inform that this edition had the highest number of submissions. Altogether there were about 30 proposals from 20 countries. From that, it can be foreseen that the IFEC 2011 will be a great competition and its results will have a technological and educational impact in the electrical engineering field.

Since we had so many applications, the proposals evaluation process is taking longer than planed. We apologize for the delay in posting the list of teams selected for the competition. We are working hard trying to have the list posted by mid-December 2010.

About the IEEE 2011 International Future Energy Challenge

The International Future Energy Challenge (IFEC) is an international student competition for innovation, conservation, and effective use of electrical energy. The competition is open to college and university student teams from recognized engineering programs in any location. The 2011 competition addresses two broad topic areas:

Topic (A) Low Cost Lithium-Ion Battery Charger for Automotive and Renewable Energy Applications: All teams are encouraged to develop cost effective, novel solutions with proper protection circuits. The lithium-ion battery charger should be designed to have higher performance, lower weight, faster charging with longer battery effective usage times, and consistent reliability.

Topic (B) Low Power Induction Motor Drive System Supplied from a Single Photovoltaic Panel for an Emergency Water Treatment Device Maximizer: Develop an autonomous and fractional power (0.2hp) induction motor drive system. It will be supplied from a single photovoltaic panel, and will be responsible to drive a nanofiltration system without using any electrical energy storage device.

Participation is on a proposal basis. Those schools that are interested must submit a proposal no later than October 31st, 2010. The electronic copy of the proposal in PDF format must be sent to the respective topic coordinator via email and with copy to the IFEC 2011 chairman. Proposals will be judged by a distinguished panel of volunteer experts from the IEEE and from industry. Schools with successful proposals will be notified by December 15th , 2010. Major sponsor of the 2011 competition is the IEEE Power Electronics Society (PELS).

The Request for Proposal (RFP) is linked here in PDF format.
